Public Liability Insurance For Tradies - What is this for?

Protecting you and yours

Public Liability Insurance will protect you if you directly or indirectly cause damage to property or an injury to someone; while working on a job site.

Public Liability  Insurance is often a requirement

In many instances you will be required to have Public Liability Insurance before you can undertake any work. This may be a legal obligation for your industry or a stipulation by the client; this is particularly true for large contracts.

It might not be required, but consider it anyway

If you can get away without needing it, we still recommend that you seriously consider getting it. Many Tradies have had the misfortune of having some unforeseen incident happen on their job site and then watched as they went to the wall under the financial burden. Why take the risk?

Accidents happen

If you're a tradesman on a job site and someone is accidentally electrocuted or they trip over your gear and sustain an injury, there are two things you need:

  1. Public liability insurance; and
  2. Enough public liability insurance cover for the full extent of the claims made against you.

Public Liability Insurance - What doesn't this cover?

Doesn't cover everything

Whilst Public Liability Insurance will cover you for any property damage or injuries to people on your job site, it won't cover any injuries to you or damage to your property.

Cover for your own injury

Tradesman Injury & Illness Insurance (Income Protection Insurance) will cover you if you become injured at work; it will even cover you if you get injured away from work.

Cover for your tools and trailer

Tool Insurance and Vehicle and Trailer Insurance will cover most of your property if it becomes damaged or stolen.

We can explain everything

Important: Make sure you check with us when organising your Public Liability Insurance so you know exactly what it does and doesn't cover.

Points to consider with your Public Liability Insurance!

$5 million used to be enough

All tradesmen and sub-contractors on a job site need to carry public liability insurance to protect themselves against professional and personal financial ruin. While the industry minimum standard for public liability insurance cover is for $5 million, there is growing demand for $10 million public liability insurance policies.

Pay monthly at no extra cost

The good news is that Tradesure's public liability insurance premiums are affordable and the premium may be paid monthly at no extra cost.

Insurance for Subbies

Sub-contractors are deemed to be self-employed, and employers should always check that sub-contractors have their own current and adequate public liability insurance before allowing them to enter a job site.

Keep your insurer informed

When it comes to engaging labour hire workers, there are additional important issues that must be considered. The key is to advise your Public Liability insurer when you engage labour hire staff so that proper provision may be made in the policy for them.

Conditions may change if you work in different states

If you are an Electrician and you travel with your work, it is important to check that your public liability insurance complies with the requirements of your State Electrical Contractors Association as these conditions can vary from state to state.  Tradesure can help with all your electrician insurance needs.

It is all about protecting Tradies and Subbies

The sole purpose of tradesmans public liability insurance is to protect the tradesman or sub-contractor against financial claims in the event of damage to property or injury to people (other than employees), that have been caused by the tradesman or a member of the tradesman's staff. It is important to note that a contractor's public liability insurance policy may not cover sub-contractors who may have been engaged for a job.

All levels need to be insured

Even if the main contractor's public liability insurance responds in the event of a claim for which the sub-contractor is liable, the contractor's insurer may recover the claim amount from the sub-contractor.
